Job Description

The primary responsibility of a paramedic is to provide high-quality, pre-hospital emergency medical care. Duties involve responding to emergency calls, treating patients at the scene, and ensuring their safe transport to healthcare facilities.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Delivering clinical emergency interventions on-site and during patient transportation.
  • Operating medical equipment and ensuring vehicles are fully operational.
  • Recording accurate patient and administrative data.
  • Coordinating care using communications systems.
  • Supporting management and participating in staff wellness initiatives.
  • Upholding professionalism in communication with patients, the public, and healthcare teams.

Minimum Educational Requirements

Paramedic emergency care roles

Each grade level has specific qualification criteria:

  • Grade 1: Critical Care Assistant (CCA) certification.
  • Grade 2: CCA or National Diploma in Emergency Medical Care.
  • Grade 3 & Grade 4: CCA, National Diploma, or BTech in Emergency Medical Care.

Professional Registration

All applicants must be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) for the relevant paramedic category:

  • Grade 1: Paramedic (CCA)
  • Grade 2: Paramedic (CCA or NDip)
  • Grade 3 & 4: Paramedic (CCA, NDip, or ECP)

Required Experience by Grade

  • Grade 1: No experience required (CCA)
  • Grade 2:
    • CCA: 7 years
    • NDip: None
  • Grade 3:
    • CCA: 14 years
    • NDip: 7 years
    • ECP: None
  • Grade 4:
    • CCA: 24 years
    • NDip: 17 years
    • ECP: 10 years

Additional Requirements

  • Valid Code C1 Driver’s License
  • Valid Professional Driver’s Permit (PrDP)
  • Demonstrated physical and mental fitness

Core Competencies

Candidates must demonstrate:

  • Proficiency in emergency response procedures.
  • Understanding of EMS protocols and equipment.
  • Strong communication and decision-making abilities.
  • Capacity to work in high-pressure environments.
  • Ethical, accurate, and timely record-keeping.
