Overview

The South African Police Service (SAPS) is inviting applications from former detectives with proven experience in investigative work for re-appointment on fixed-term contracts. Successful candidates will be placed back into the Service in their previous ranks (Constable to Colonel) and deployed to priority areas where their skills are most needed.

This initiative aims to address investigative backlogs and strengthen SAPS detective capacity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Investigate, manage and finalise criminal cases.
  • Attend to court appearances and liaise with prosecutors.
  • Gather, analyse and preserve evidence.
  • Arrest and process suspects.
  • Maintain CAS system updates and case files.
  • Mentor junior detectives and ensure compliance with investigative procedures.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be a former SAPS member under the Police Service Act (Constable – Colonel).
  • Not older than 65 years.
  • Grade 12 (Senior Certificate) or higher qualification.
  • Valid driver’s license (Code B).
  • Completion of Basic Police Training.
  • Detective experience essential (detective/ investigation-related courses advantageous).
  • Computer literacy.
  • No criminal record, pending cases, or disciplinary findings.
  • Medically and mentally fit; no visible tattoos when in uniform/civilian clothes.
  • South African citizenship.
  • Proficiency in at least two official languages (one must be English).
