Job Overview

South African Airways (SAA) is inviting skilled aviators to become part of its flight operations as a First Officer. This exciting opportunity is ideal for experienced pilots passionate about aviation safety, international standards, and operational excellence.

As a First Officer, you will take full responsibility for flight safety—on the ground and in the air—serving as either a Second-in-Command (P2) or Cruise Relief Pilot (P3).


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure flight safety and compliance with aviation regulations
  • Perform all pilot duties required by SAA’s operational standards
  • Comply with Civil Aviation and international aviation laws
  • Participate in pre-employment testing and evaluations
  • Represent South African Airways with professionalism and integrity

  • Aviation training records
  • Summary of aircraft types and flying hours
  • Certified copies of:
    • Matric Certificate
    • South African ID or Passport
    • Academic transcripts
    • Last 3 logbook pages and logbook summary
    • Pilot License and Class 1 Medical Certificate
  • CV

Note: Preference will be given to female candidates as per SAA’s Employment Equity Plan.


Minimum Qualifications and Experience

To qualify for the South African Airways First Officer position, applicants must have:

  • Matric Certificate (Grade 12) or N3 with relevant SAQA-accredited tertiary qualifications
  • Compulsory subjects: English, Mathematics or Statistics 101, and Physical Science or Computer Science
  • Valid South African Commercial Pilot License (CPL) with completed ATPL ground subjects (Frozen ATPL)
  • Must obtain a valid ATPL within 4 years of employment
  • Valid Class 1 Medical Certificate
  • 1,500+ flying hours, including 200+ hours on multi-engine aircraft
  • South African citizenship and a valid passport

Key Skills and Knowledge

  • Deep understanding of safety standards, aviation regulations (CAA, ICAO, IATA, FAA, EASA)
  • Proficiency in international aviation customs and travel procedures
  • Excellent business communication (written and verbal)
  • Strong judgment and decision-making under pressure
